Carriageway Surface Defects

This dataset contains carriageway surface defects (including potholes) recorded on public roads maintained by DfI Roads in Northern Ireland. Surface defects are recorded using a range of defect categories, e.g. pothole, rutted, depressed, cracked, uneven, etc. The defect is also prioritised dependant on severity and risk to the public. This current yearly dataset is automatically updated each evening.

Lineage

This information is recorded and managed on the Road Maintenance Client System (RMCS) a mapping based data management system. The system is primarily used by staff based in local DfI Roads maintenance section offices as well as DfI Roads headquarters. Surface defects are recorded following routine or ad-hoc inspections mostly using hand-held field devices.

Additional Information

Please noted, lower priority surface defects may be used for future planning purposes and therefore may not be instructed for repair. In addition, due to funding and resource constraints throughout the year there is a backlog of instructed defects incomplete.
