Northern Ireland Business Register and Employment Survey

The Northern Ireland Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES) is a survey of employers in Northern Ireland that collects employee job counts. Results are available according to gender, full or part-time working, industrial activity based on the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC2007) and location, subject to confidentiality constraints.

The BRES covers employee jobs only. It excludes agriculture (but includes animal husbandry service activities and hunting, trapping and game propagation), self employed, HM Armed Forces, private domestic servants, homeworkers, Jobskills trainees without a contract of employment (non-employed status). Figures for the number of employees in Agriculture are available separately from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) Agriculture Census.

Lineage

Persons working 30 hours or less per week are regarded as being in part-time employment.

The surveys count the number of jobs rather than the number of persons with jobs. Therefore a person holding both a full-time and a part-time job, or someone with two part-time jobs, will be counted twice.

Sub Northern Ireland analysis from the Northern Ireland Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES) is primarily based on the location of the jobs, not on the home address of the employees. However, in a small number of instances where employers were not able to provide figures by actual location, the employees were allocated to the address where pay records were held.
