National Nature Reserves

In Northern Ireland statutory nature reserves are areas of importance for flora, fauna, geological or other special feature for conservation purposes and to provide the opportunity for research. They are designated under the Nature Conservation and Amenity Lands (Northern Ireland) Order 1985.

In Northern Ireland early NNR external boundaries were mapped on hardcopy Ordnance Survey NI sheets and in 1999 GIS was adopted as a means of generating NNR maps against digital Ordnance Survey NI basemaps. Note: Ordnance Survey NI is part of Land & Property Services.
